THE HISTORY OF SUGARING

Sugaring makes up half our business, and we are very passionate about it.

Many of our clients are eager to transition into a more natural and organic lifestyle, and that includes hair removal, but believe it or not, sugaring is not a new method. It makes you wonder, what took us so long to catch up?

This Ancient Egyption art form was said to be used on Cleopatra herself, dating back to 1900 BC. It is originally a Persian method of hair removal, confined to the regions surrounding Persia up until the first millennium AD. Sugaring was also known as sukkar or ḥalawa in the Middle East, as ağda in Turkey, and as moum in Iran.

Just water, sugar and citric acid makes up the sugar paste, and although the method has developed slightly over the centuries, it remains efficient, reliable and most importantly, natural.

Lemon juice is added for its acidity, breaking up the sucrose into fructose and glucose. Pre-made sugar paste can be bought, but it takes much practise to achieve the right consistency and technique, it’s very easy to get stuck, so we recommend leaving it to the professionals (hence why we call it an art form). The sugar paste can be applied at room temperature or heated to a lukewarm temperature, minimising the risk of burns. For this reason, sugaring is generally preferred over waxing when it comes to hair removal on larger areas of the skin.

Applied in the opposite direction to the hair growth, and removed using a 'flicking' motion in the same direction as the hair growth, the sugar paste is used to extract body hair directly from the hair follicle. This results in minimal hair breakages, less pain and minimal ingrown hairs (something we know many of our Sugared & Sprayed clients are cautious about).

Sugaring is the most effective hair removal method there is, when it comes to cost and application. All our sugarista’s need is a biodegradable gloved hand and a client with at least 3-4 inches of hair growth (approximately half the size of a rice grain).

Aside from it’s efficiency, regular sugaring also minimises hair growth, promoting hair refinery, meaning you'll eventually need treatments less frequently. It is also the safest and least painful method of professional hair removal, as mentioned by many of our clients who have tried alternative hair removal methods before coming to Sugared & Sprayed.

Did you know, Persian women were the first to declare a hairless body to be the epitome of beauty and youth? While we LOVE to sugar, we take a more relaxed approach to body hair at Sugared & Sprayed. There is nothing wrong with body hair.

If you want it, keep it, and if you don’t, sugar it - simple.

We’ll only sugar you where you want and won’t push clients to sugar areas where they appreciate their hair.

Oh, and remember, sugaring is NOT wax, and if you see a ‘sugar wax’ paste in store or online, we cannot guarantee that it is an all natural, chemical free paste like we use at S&S, please check all of the ingredients beforehand.
